There hasn’t been much in the way of MCU news in 2020, but the Sony universe of marvel Characters is still pushing forward. Yes, numerous of their plans are on hold because of the success of marvel Studios’ Spider-Man movies, but the two universes are growing closer. We saw in the first trailer that Michael Keaton will be reprising his role as Adrian Toomes in Morbius, and we’ve seen Spider-Man graffiti in the background of scenes. We don’t get much in the way of new footage in the Morbius trailer for Japan, but fans do get an introduction from star Jared Leto. The actor sits in on a couch in his home and introduces both the trailer and the concept of the film.
He says:
“Hello to all you fantastic marvel fans. I can’t wait for you to check out my new movie, Morbius…coming your way very soon. In the film I play a new marvel character who attempts to cure his lifelong blood disease with…experimental science. The process turns him into a living vampire…. It’s an exciting role in an expanding universe.”
Leto added that he’s pleased that Japan is doing “well” with the COVID-19 pandemic, though their cases are on the rise. Still, theaters are open, and the film will reportedly debut on big screens there “soon.” Jared Leto then introduced the new Morbius trailer which doesn’t really reveal much of anything new. In fact, it didn’t even have the reveal of Morbius’ vampire face.
What’s many interesting about this presentation is that Leto seems to be insinuating that this is a part of the marvel Cinematic Universe. and the presence of Michael Keaton’s character may suggest that, too, though he only appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is Sony pictures film. When Sony and Disney reached a deal to keep Spider-Man in the MCU, Kevin Feige said that Spider-Man can travel between universes (whatever that means). nonetheless this is a unusual tactic, because the MCU doesn’t typically carry out well in Japan.

Nonetheless, it appears that Morbius is going full-steam ahead, for a release in 2021 in theaters internationally. However, without a streaming service of their own, Sony would have to turn to premium video-on-demand if they wanted to release it in the US.
